Chapter Twelve

Storm picked at her meal while Jag wolfed his down. She drank more wine, then finally he pointed to her plate asking, “Looks like my skills aren’t good enough, huh?”

Her face flushed as she blustered. “What? No, it’s perfect. I’m sorry, it’s not the food, it’s me. I’ve a lot on my mind.”

Jag wiped his mouth with his napkin before pushing his plate away, then stared over at her. “You’re safe, Storm. I promised you’ll be safe with me.”

“That’s not what’s bothering me,” she admitted.

Jag cocked his head to the side before reaching for her hand, holding it and running his thumb over it softly. “Okay, what is it? Can I help?”

“Yes, I think you can.” Storm inhaled, then let it out slowly before rattling off what was bothering her. “Something’s going on between us. You can’t deny it, so don’t try. I’ve never felt such an attraction to anyone before, or so quickly. It’s weird and scary, but I get the feeling you know exactly what’s going on, but you’re not telling me. I know you said you would later, but I’d like a hint, or something, because I’m feeling stuff that’s just not normal, and with everything else going on, well, you can understand it’s all a bit much for me right now. Then there was earlier, when I was in your lap and you wanted to, well, you wanted to, and I sure as hell did. Then you pulled away and didn’t. Why? I’m so confused, Jag.”

His hand covered hers, then tightened around it while his eyes darkened further. Storm wondered, again, how it was possible. Jag’s eyes were already almost black, she couldn’t figure out how they could change, but they did. When they changed, it affected her in ways she couldn’t deny. Her skin felt like it was on fire, her core clenched, and she wanted to fling herself into his arms and wrap herself around him. Jag would take her to places she’d never been before, of that, Storm was certain. Only he’d held himself back, and it was driving her crazy. Most men would be taking advantage of the situation, but Jag was doing the opposite.

He let out a long sigh, his jaw tight with a tic visible at the side of his left eye before he leaned toward her to inhale. What the hell was he doing?

“Your scent drives me and my wolf crazy. It’s amazing, Storm, so damn alluring. You have no idea what it’s doing to me, or how hard it’s been to keep my hands off you. I want you so much, but I’ve told you, it’s...”

“Complicated, yes, you’ve said so before,” Storm interrupted. “I’m not a child and I’m not an idiot, so unless you’re married with kids, what’s the problem?”

Jag reeled back, shaking his head. “What? No, I’m not married and I’ve no kids. I’m not in a relationship with anyone, Storm. It’s not the issue, it’s just you’ve no knowledge about us, I mean Shifters, and I don’t want to.
